Seasoning vs Source

anschegrob

“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness?..."

Matthew 5:13 (MSG)

I'm sure you've seen movies or read stories about people stranded after a plane crash or shipwreck. People can survive without food for weeks, but only three days without water. Drinking seawater can be life-threatening to humans. The salt in the water will only make you thirst for more. In order for our kidneys to excess the salt, the body needs fresh water to dilute the salt with. In the end, the kidneys won't function properly and with dehydration added to it, well let's just say it doesn't end well.

Where are we going with this you might ask?

Friends, we are called to be the salt of the world, to bring flavor and seasoning to the world. He isn't calling us to be the source of life to those around us.

"...but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 4:14 (NIV)

Can one live without salt? Yes

Can someone live without freshwater? No

People can live without you, but they cannot live without the very Source of life - JESUS.

In His Word, God never compared us to living water, rather He compared us to salt which makes people want to know more about God, His living water, and not us.

You are called to be the seasoning, not the source.

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

John 3:37-38 (NIV)

We are lying to ourselves to think that we can thirst the hunger of others when the only version of water that we can give is saltwater and it will never satisfy their thirst. If we lead others by means of self-gratification and praise, one of three things will happen.

  1. People will hold you accountable for their joy and you will exhaust yourself from giving and giving.

  2. The motive that will drive them to do certain things in life will be to please you and not to pursue His dream and purpose for their lives.

  3. They will never be able to experience what it means to be truly satisfied.

We weren't created to sit on a pedestal, but to serve those around us. To bring flavoring and point them into the direction of the never-ending well. Setting the example as ambassadors of Christ.

Throughout the Bible, God called servants to carry out His plan. He called those, who were willing to be different, to bring out the spices and aromas of new revelations from His Word. Through serving, the people around them were able to say that they have tasted and seen that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8).

With our mistakes and imperfections, we all have a story to tell, we all have a testimony to share. May we use it to serve those around us and bring glory to the One who is and will forever be worthy to be praised.
